FILMMAKER Q&A – The Gangrape – Zarin Ali – Actor

OR: What was the inspiration for your film?

ZA: I was in a drama class and my teacher asked me to take up the challenging role. When I heard about it, my first reaction was “What!”. Then, at the next moment, I accepted the challenge. After a few hours, a news notification came about a girl’s rape. I read the news. It gave goosebumps and then it was like not looking back and then there was the feeling to use my art as a mechanism to portray the effects of the heinous crime ever commited by mankind.

OR: When did you conceive the idea for your film and how long did it take before it was realized?

ZA: Just 1 day and 1 hour which is nothing in front of the real pain of the victim.

OR: What was the most challenging aspect of working in a short film format?

ZA: Managing the different kinds of emotions in a limited time was really challenging.

OR: What was the most challenging aspect of your production?

ZA: The resources were limited but we just managed as the story was more important to us.

OR: Do you have any advice for first-time filmmakers?

ZA: Never underestimate yourself. The movie market is all a business and only a few would be there to care for the content. So only the few might help you in reaching out. Besides, never consider actors as puppets!
