Title: The Artist Is Absent: A Short Film On Martin Margiela
Runtime: 12 min
Country: USA
Director: Alison Chernick
Placement: Best Documentary Short
Competition: June, 2015
Synopsis: For more than twenty years, Martin Margiela has been a major force in the fashion world. Yet if his influence is inescapable, the man himself remains elusive, determined to maintain his anonymity in an age of celebrity. In this short film, Margiela’s story is narrated by some of fashion’s biggest names, including designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who hired him in Paris; critic Suzi Menkes, who promoted him internationally, and designer Raf Simons. Through their words, the off-camera Margiela becomes a vivid presence.
