Title: The Dynamic Double Standard
Runtime: 5 min
Country: USA
Director: Luke Patton
Placement: Award of Merit
Competition: December, 2015
Synopsis: Zoey’s first night as a superhero is nearly ruined when she’s given a sexy and impractical uniform.
OR: What was the inspiration for your film?
LP: I was on the phone with my mom discussing ideas I had for my next short film when I got the idea for “The Dynamic Double Standard”. When I read aloud the list of ideas I had nothing resonated with her. My mom then suggested I make a superhero movie. I responded that I would only make a superhero movie if the female heroine was mocking her ridiculously impractical costume. My mom laughed incredibly hard and I knew I had an idea for my next short film.
OR: When did you conceive the idea for your film and how long did it take before it was realized?
LP: The turnaround for “The Dynamic Double Standard” was relatively quick. I wrote the script in three days and filmed only 2 weeks later. It took about one month to finish postproduction. It was the fastest I’ve ever completed any film project!
OR: What was the most challenging aspect of working in a short film format?
LP: The most challenging aspect of working in a short film format is telling a complete story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
OR: What was the most challenging aspect of your production?
LP: The most challenging aspect of production was working through changing weather conditions. We shot the film during the summer in Los Angeles while Southern California was suffering from a severe drought. Unfortunately, it rained almost the entire second night of filming. This was especially problematic since half of the film that already been shot. As a result, we filmed half the movie during brief respites between rain spells. There were several shots I really wanted to keep in the film but ultimately had to lose because of the rain.
OR: Do you have any advice for first-time filmmakers?
LP: Keep things simple! “The Dynamic Double Standard” is essentially one joke – a female hero gets a sexy and impractical costume. Keeping things concise allowed the film to have a cohesive and clear story while also maintaining a brief runtime.
