Country: Hungary
Director: Henriett Tunyogi
Placement: Award of Merit
Competition: June, 2017

Synopsis: It is 2016. A mother and daughter meet again for the first time in at least 20 years, in a hospital. The mother, Ester, is on her deathbed. Her daughter, Julia, has only come to her side to learn who her father is, something her mother has never been willing to tell her. Julia’s soul is in upheaval, torn apart by incomprehension, anger, and rage.

Her mother was raped, and Julia is the child of her rapist.

The film presents the meeting, a mere 12 minutes, between mother and daughter when Julia gives her mother one last chance to reveal her secret. She believes that she can only grow into a woman with the fortitude given by self-knowledge if she knows her past and her family’s past. Both mother and daughter go through a profound emotional and moral purification as the painful and traumatic past comes to the surface. Freedom from the burden of secrecy allows the daughter to forgive and the mother to find peace.
